This document is a how-to for site visits that includes what to do now, a few months before, and right before the visit. It was presented at the 2008 ADVANCE PI Meeting session on Preparing for a Mid Award NSF Site Visit.
The ADVANCE Leadership Team provides the focus and strategy for the ADVANCE initiatives. The team comprises faculty and university leadership -- predominantly from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines. The leadership structure also encompasses a smaller sub-set of this group, which provides guidance to the work.

The UNC Charlotte ADVANCE Faculty Affairs Office provides leadership and support for all ADVANCE program components. The ADVANCE team centralizes and guides leadership and faculty development initiatives and mentoring efforts and supports policy changes to promote institutional changes to benefit all faculty.

This presentation discusses how Utah State University’s ADVANCE program has been successful in terms of team leadership, responsibility, and morale. They follow principles by Kotter: (1) have leaders with positions of power, who are credible, and able to drive change; (2) avoid personalities who are egos, snakes and reluctant team players; and (3) teams should have trust and common goals. ADVANCE Rising Tide Center Research Personnel
Dr. Leslie E. Tower joined the WVU faculty in 2002. She has a dual appointment in the Division of Social Work and Division of Public Administration. Dr. Tower has published research on women and work, adult learners, and violence against women.
Amy Hessl is an Associate Professor for the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University. Dr. Hessl is interested in the interaction between ecosystem processes, climate variability and human activities in forested systems.
Dr. Marjorie Darrah has over 13 years of experience teaching in higher education. Her research interests are in the fields of algorithm development, artificial intelligence verification and validation, educational technology integration, haptics software development, and educational and program evaluation. Darrah taught ten years at Alderson-Broaddus College where she became the Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences.
Kasi Jackson is an interdisciplinary researcher working in feminist science studies. Although the body of her research is focused on women’s and gender studies, it also extends outside this area (for example, science, technology, engineering and math education and animal studies). Due to the interdisciplinary nature of these areas, she publishes in journals targeted to social science, science and humanities audiences, as well as to interdisciplinary audiences such as women’s and gender studies, among others
In the Fall of 1990, Professor King started his academic career at West Virginia University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He served as the Director of Graduate Studies within the Department of Chemistry prior to his appointment as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Melissa Latimer is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Adjunct Professor of Women’s Studies at West Virginia University. She received an MA and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Kentucky. Melissa Latimer’s research and publications have focused on the major ways in which gender, race, and class inequality are constructed and reconstructed through labor market processes and welfare policies.
James Nolan is an associate professor in the Division of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University where he teaches courses in the area of crime and social control. His research currently focuses on police procedures, crime measurement, and hate crimes and homicide. Dr. Nolan’s professional career began as a police officer in Wilmington, Delaware. In 13 years with that department, he worked in a variety of divisions, including patrol, community policing, organized crime and vice, and planning a
Katie directs a comprehensive grants development program commensurate with institutional priorities, goals, and activities. She provides professional guidance to faculty to ensure effective and efficient grant proposal development and approvals. Katie facilitates large interdisciplinary projects between the Eberly College of Arts & Sciences, other colleges, and outside collaborators by managing the pre-award application process.
