"Creating a Positive Departmental Climate at Virginia Tech: A Compendium of Successful Strategies” was created as part of the AdvanceVT Departmental Climate Initiative. AdvanceVT's Department Climate Committee collected successful strategies for developing and maintaining a positive work environment and shared them with participants at the fourth annual Advancing Women at Virginia Tech workshop.
In 2007, the Provost's Office, AdvanceVT, and the Organization of Women Faculty hosted a peer mentoring workshop designed for assistant professors and intended to develop a peer support network at Virginia Tech.
The seventh annual Advancing Diversity at Virginia Tech workshop featured Dr. Freeman Hrabowski as the keynote speaker and breakout sessions on student recruitment, faculty mentoring, work/life balance, employee climate survey findings, and dealing with difference in the workplace.

Since 2003, AdvanceVT's Policy Work Group has reviewed and updated Virginia Tech's policy on tenure clock extension and developed new policies on modified duties and part-time employment. These policies put Virginia Tech in the vanguard of institutions addressing issues of academic work life.

In June 2006, AdvanceVT hosted a conference on preparing for an academic career.
Due to a lack of female leadership the ADVANCE program at Virginia Tech has created a new leadership development program. Information about this program is presented in this summary for the 2005 PI meeting.
The AdvanceVT Leadership Development Program selects a cohort of women from across the university who demonstrate an interest in and potential to assume leadership roles for individualized coaching and skill development. The program begins by assessing the current strengths and areas for development of the women in the cohort and provides feedback based on that assessment.
