ADVANCE works to help increase the number of women in science and engineering. This webpage is a list of resources to help make the job easier for people who work for ADVANCE.
The following presents a summary of the findings documented in the final evaluation report of the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute (WISELI). WISELI has been in existence at UW-Madison since the awarding of an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant from the National Science Foundation in 2002.1
UNC Charlotte ADVANCE benefits from the involvement of a small professional staff and the commitment of numerous UNC Charlotte volunteers who serve on committees, as mentors, as subject matter experts and facilitators and in other roles.
The ADVANCE Leadership Team provides the focus and strategy for the ADVANCE initiatives. The team comprises faculty and university leadership -- predominantly from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines. The leadership structure also encompasses a smaller sub-set of this group, which provides guidance to the work.
The ADVANCE Program at Brown University seeks to increase the retention and advancement of women faculty in science and engineering by making available mechanisms that promote career success for all faculty scientists—mechanisms including mentoring, grant seeking support, and tools for becoming leaders in academic and scientific communities.
The UNC Charlotte ADVANCE Faculty Affairs Office provides leadership and support for all ADVANCE program components. The ADVANCE team centralizes and guides leadership and faculty development initiatives and mentoring efforts and supports policy changes to promote institutional changes to benefit all faculty.

ADVANCE Rising Tide Center Evaluation Team
The Advancement Initiatives Council was formed in March 2009 and will continue to serve as the internal advisory committee for the ADVANCE Rising Tide Center.
Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering
Dr. Marjorie Darrah has over 13 years of experience teaching in higher education. Her research interests are in the fields of algorithm development, artificial intelligence verification and validation, educational technology integration, haptics software development, and educational and program evaluation. Darrah taught ten years at Alderson-Broaddus College where she became the Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences.
University of Maryland, College Park, in partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF), has made an historic commitment to the professional growth of women faculty in all academic disciplines at our institution. Through this partnership, which involves a major contribution of in-kind funding from the University, the ADVANCE Program aims to improve rates of retention and advancement of women faculty by fostering changes in institutional culture.
